Test equipment for a flywheel energy storage system using a magnetic bearing composed of superconducting coils and superconducting bulks

Abstract: Energy storage systems are necessary for renewable energy sources such as solar power in order to stabilize their output power, which fluctuates widely depending on the weather. Since ‘flywheel energy storage systems’ (FWSSs) do not use chemical reactions, they do not deteriorate due to charge or discharge. This is an advantage of FWSSs in applications for renewable energy plants. A conventional FWSS has capacity limitation because of the mechanical bearings used to support the flywheel. Therefore, we have des… Show more

“…Superconducting YBa Cu O (YBCO) open-cell foam samples [ 1 , 2 , 3 ] are interesting materials for a variety of applications (fault current limiters, trapped field magnets, space applications [ 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 ]) due to their various, unique properties, which include low sample weight, a very effective oxygenation process, excellent thermal properties allowing for quick cooling, excellent mechanical properties, the possibility for easy shaping of the samples and straightforward upscaling of the sample size. The cooling effectivity, effective oxygenation and sample upscaling have previously been demonstrated in [ 3 , 12 , 13 ].…”

“…As a typical type-II superconductor, YBaCuO bulk is also called the high temperature superconducting (HTS) bulk. And YBaCuO bulks are widely used in maglev bearing (Hull, 2000), flywheel storage (Ogata et al, 2016), and maglev vehicle (D’Ovidio et al, 2008; Deng et al, 2016b; Liang et al, 2019; Schultz et al, 2005; Sotelo et al, 2015; Wang et al, 2002).…”
