Test Bias: Validity of the Sat for Blacks and Whites in Thirteen Integrated Institutions

Abstract: Differential prediction for black and white students was empirically investigated at 13 institutions by comparison of regression planes. Particular attention was given to the possibility that prediction procedures that are appropriate for white (majority) students would under‐predict the performance of black (minority) students. The data tend to support, among others, the following generalizations: (1) a single regression plane cannot be used to predict freshman GPA for both blacks and whites in many of the in… Show more

“…- As observed in some other st~dies, the observed intercorrelations among the test scores were generally higher for the black sample than for the white sample. A comparison of black and white regressions'showed that the white regression equation significantly overestimated black criterion performance in agreemen~with Cleary's (1968) results for a southwest college and Temp's (1971) results in 12 of 13 integrated colleges.…”

For seven of eight predictors studied the regression lines for minority and majority groups were parallel with lower intercepts for the culturally disadvantaged group.…”
