Space tribology is a very big aspect of space exploration, despite of this fact, there is a dearth of coherent and concise literature available in the field of space tribology. It becomes difficult to understand the tribological behaviour of mating bodies under the extreme environmental circumstances in space due to their potential chemical and physical interactions. The radiation, vacuum, environmental conditions and temperature, are the factors which affects the friction and wear behaviour of mating surfaces and may alter the chemical structure of solid or liquid lubricant. The combination of tribo-physical and tribo-chemical interactions makes the tribological analysis very difficult to understand. The lack of understanding and ignorance might be the reason for not addressing this issue in the past. This review contains the qualitative and quantitative information on the tribological behaviour of different types of liquid lubricants, greases, soft and hard coatings, combined lubrication systems, testing equipment, composites, solid lubricants and alloys developed for space applications.

The paper presents an analysis of the methods of surface hardening of parts. The authors experimentally worked out and determined the technology of combined hardening of parts of friction pairs of hydraulic pneumatic units, which allows increasing the efficiency and reliability of the units. In order to increase the life and reliability of precision friction pairs, the production feasibility of combining spark alloying and diamond smoothing has been substantiated. Technological and software for the formation of regular micro reliefs, surface reinforcement with combined processing are proposed.

The Efficiency of Tribocoupling with МоS2-Based Solid Lubricant Coatings Using Magnetron and Suspension Sputtering

An analysis of studies conducted under vacuum conditions revealed that MoS2-based solid lubricant coatings applied to a titanium base using magnetron sputtering was virtually unusable. It was established that satisfactory working capacity of the considered couplings could be achieved by preliminary treatment of the base, that is by galvanic chrome plating and nickel plating. It was shown that life of a coupling with solid lubricant coatings sputtered using the magnetron method on a ceramic base was higher than those sputtered on a metal base. However, starting from the middle of operational life, temporary “surges” in the coefficient of friction occurred and subsequently stabilized. The life of coatings sputtered using the magnetron method was 2.51 times lower than that of a coupling with coatings of the BNII NP 212 type obtained using the suspension method, and 3.65 times lower than that of similar types by foreign manufacturers. The coefficient of friction for the considered couplings under vacuum conditions varied from 0.02 to 0.07.
