Tessera: Scalable, shade robust module

Abstract: This paper describes the development and output measurements on a new shade robust module, named the Tessera module. This module uses a novel electrical configuration, comprised of shade independent blocks protected by in-laminate diodes, with a mixture of series and parallel connections. By using ECN's existing back contact technology [1], no significant additional manufacturing costs occur. The design, method and manufacturing technology will be explained. The module leads to an increased annual output in ca… Show more

“…[16] Another example is the Tessera module, where industrial cells are divided into smaller units and in-laminate low-current bypass diodes are employed. [17] One way to facilitate further implementation of PE in PV applications is to integrate PE components into crystalline silicon (c-Si) PV cells. [18] This integration can take various forms, including the incorporation of PE components during the manufacturing process.…”

“…As a countermeasure, solar cells in PV modules with parallel interconnections are usually cut into smaller pieces to compensate for the total module current. 18,19 The most prominent example of commercial PV modules with parallel interconnections are half-cut solar cell modules. [20][21][22] Even though these approaches are effective ways to improve the shading tolerance of PV modules, 23 they also necessitate a more complex manufacturing process.…”

“…In this paper we report on the TESSERA concept 24,25) which is based on existing back contact technology [26][27][28] and is inherently more shade tolerant. In the back contact technology all contacts to the cell are placed on the rear of the cell.…”
