Terzina on board NUSES: A pathfinder for EAS Cherenkov Light Detection from space

Abstract: In this paper we introduce the Terzina telescope as a part of the NUSES space mission. This telescope aims to detect Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECRs) through the Cherenkov light emission from the extensive air showers (EAS) that they create in the Earth’s atmosphere. The Cherenkov photons are aligned along the shower axis inside about ∼ 0.2 − 1°, so that they become detectable by Terzina when it points towards the Earth’s limb. A sun-synchronous orbit will allow the telescope to observe only the night si… Show more

“…By considering a non-relativistic, low-energy charged particle traversing the ∆E-E telescope, the deposited energy in the thinner silicon detector, ∆E ∝ Z 2 β 2 , and the particle's kinetic energy, E k ≈ 1 2 m(βc) 2 , depends on the particle's velocity. If we combine these parameters, it is possible to define a particle classifier as…”

“…NUSES is a space mission aimed at testing innovative approaches for studying cosmic rays, gamma rays, and astrophysical neutrinos. The satellite will host two payloads, named Terzina [1,2] and Zirè [3][4][5][6][7]. Terzina will be a pathfinder for future missions devoted to observing Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECRs) and neutrino astronomy using space-based instruments [8][9][10][11].…”

“…Thanks to the NUSES orbit attitude, the Terzina field of view will point to the dark side of the Earth's limb, looking for Cherenkov light emissions from UHE CRs or neutrinos. For more details see [2] and ref. [3] in these proceedings.…”

“…The search for VHE and UHE neutrinos is part of Multi-Messenger Astronomy which is a rapidly advancing field due to recent groundbreaking discoveries such as the detection of the astrophysical neutrino flux by IceCube [1] and the observation of gravitational waves by LIGO [2]. Future instruments will further explore the Very-High-Energy (VHE) neutrino window (>10 PeV) such as The Probe of Extreme Multi-Messenger Astrophysics (POEMMA) [3], Terzina on board NUSES [4], and Trinity [5]. All these instruments use the imaging atmospheric Cherenkov technique (IACT).…”
