Terrestrial mammal community richness and temporal overlap between tigers and other carnivores in Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park, Sumatra

Abstract: Rapid and widespread biodiversity losses around the world make it important to survey and monitor endangered species, especially in biodiversity hotspots. Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park (BBSNP) is one of the largest conserved areas on the island of Sumatra, and is important for the conservation of many threatened species. Sumatran tigers (Panthera tigris sumatrae) are critically endangered and serve as an umbrella species for conservation, but may also affect the activity and distribution of other carnivo… Show more

“…Diurnal time boundaries were determined by calculating the average sunrise/sunset time from all black bear detections before and after hibernation. Overlap estimates were made for black bears before and after hibernation as well as for the different types of human activity using the overlap coefficient (Δ), which is scaled from 0 to 1, where (Δ = 1) signifies complete overlap 43 , 44 , 47 . We also investigated the effect of cub presence on black bear daily activity patterns to determine if their presence contributed to significant changes in activity, but given the smaller sample size of cub detections, we calculated this metric using combined data for both the before and after hibernation 48 .…”

“…After completion of subject identification, which included 10 volunteers identifying the given animal and completing several additional tasks (i.e., number of individuals, adult or young, behavior, male or female) we pulled all subjects with at least 50% of volunteers identifying a black bear for further review. Following our expert review, we created independent wildlife observations or detections which were determined using a 30-min interval between sightings of the same species 43 , 44 . For consistency, this method was used for both black bears and human related detections, noting that on heavily traveled human trails there may have been different individual humans passing within 30 min of each other.…”

“…The similar finding was also recorded in the Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park which is to the south of the Bukit Jambul Gunung Patah Protection Forest landscape. This landscape has a richness of 22 species of medium to large mammals (O'Brien and Kinnaird, 1996), with average annual species richness of 21.5 (range 19-24) mammal species in general (Allen et al, 2020). A similar anthropogenic influence occurs in the natural gas industry in Bontang, East Kalimantan, where 23 mammal species from 15 families and 8 orders were recorded (Sudrajat and Putro, 2019).…”

“…Data Analyses: Images retrieved from the camera traps were identified to species level excluding random captures of birds, and data were sorted into species-specific folders for all sites by season. Images were considered to be independent when they were at least 30 min apart (Linkie and Ridout, 2011;Rovero and Zimmerman, 2016;Allen et al, 2018Allen et al, , 2020.…”
