The term “Terras Caídas” is used in Amazon to refer to processes of fluvial erosion and mass movements of large and moderate scale. It is a dynamic and complex multi-causal process that involves hydrodynamic, hydrostatic, climatic, neotectonic, lithological and anthropic factors, occurring together or separately. The objective of this work is to understand the conditioning factors of the phenomenon "Terras Caídas" in lower Solimões River - Brazil. For this purpose, the study area was monitored for 2 years (2017-2018) and data from satellite images; water discharge; flow velocity; suspended sediments; water level; precipitation; wind direction; seismic activity were obtained. The hydrodynamic factors and the rain influence the “Terras Caídas” more intensely during the river flood, the processes influenced by the wind direction occur throughout the hydrological year, but with greater intensity during storms. Hydrostatic pressure occurs more frequently in ebb causing landslides. The lithology influences the stability of the banks due to unconsolidated sediments, providing erosion and mass movements. It is observed that neotectonics was not important in increasing the intensity of the "Terras Caídas" in the study area in recent years. Human activity influences destroying riparian forests and the basal erosion caused by waves formed by boats the region.

Este capítulo descreve as principais características de rios que cruzam o Estado do Pará, dando enfoque nas características abióticas de suas regiões hidrográficas, usos do solo, impactos ambientais e nas perspectivas sustentáveis quanto à ocupação e usos do solo. Pretende-se com esse capítulo contribuir com informações de forma que o leitor possa se contextualizar sobre o atual estado de preservação dos corpos hídricos e os ambientes no entorno. Ambos estão sendo impactados intensamente por atividades humanas, interferindo não somente nos aspectos ambientais, como também nos socioeconômicos. O Pará abriga algumas das bacias mais importantes do Brasil, com rios que chegam a 6.000 Km de extensão, como o Amazonas, e outros relativamente menores, mas ainda de grandes proporções, como o rio Araguaia, rio Tocantins, rio Xingu, rio Tapajós, rio Jari e o rio Guamá. Os usos do solo em cada bacia são responsáveis pela deterioração das respectivas águas, afetando diretamente organismos terrestres e aquáticos, além dos serviços ecossistêmicos provenientes de cada bacia. Com base em usos do solo mais sustentáveis, por exemplo, os sistemas agroflorestais (SAF's), espera-se aumentar o equilíbrio entre produção e conservação, garantindo solo e água com maior qualidade.

The synergistic effects of extreme weather events and socioecological vulnerability are still poorly documented for Amazonian indigenous peoples. Herein, we investigated the impacts of recent extreme weather events on Tikuna villages. Tikuna are ancient people of the Amazon, with an estimated population of approximately 53 thousand people widely distributed along the upper Solimões River in the western Brazilian Amazon. The fieldwork was carried out between October 10 and December 10, 2018, using participatory research, including focus group interviews and free-listing exercises. Four extreme weather events were recalled, namely, the extreme floods of 2009, the subsequent extreme drought of 2010, and the extreme floods of 2012 and 2015. The results indicated that Tikuna from some villages are adopting migration from floodplain habitats to nonflooded lands as a coping strategy to increase the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events. This process was characterized by famine periods, internal divisions, and increased vulnerability. The three villages have rich traditional knowledge and live on a large diversity of biological resources, base for a fishing economy and for an agroforestry system, the original indigenous subsistence agriculture with a high level of self-sufficiency in terms of food. Until our study, Tikunas had not received any information about the global climate emergency. Our findings can contribute to formulating public policies to provide support for adapting to climate change. These policies must ensure the participation of the Tikuna and other indigenous peoples in local and national discussions on climate change, strengthening their capacity to develop adaptation strategies based on their ancestral knowledge.
