Kraft paper was coated with chitosan emulsion film. The novelty of this paper is the formation of a packaging bilayer system in only one drying step, which combines a biodegradable polymer emulsion (chitosan and palmitic acid) with Kraft paper. This system is described in detail and characterized for barrier properties (water vapor permeability rate (WVPR), air permeability and water absorption capacity (Cobb test)), mechanical properties (tensile properties, Taber stiffness and tear strength) and structural properties. The application of chitosan coating (3.5 g m−2, wet basis) on Kraft paper sheets provides a significantly lower WVPR (by ca 43%) and water absorption capacity (by ca 35%) as compared to uncoated Kraft paper. The incorporation of palmitic acid into the chitosan film solutions at 1.8 g m−2 improves the properties of Kraft paper even more by further reducing the WVPR and water absorption capacity by 51 and 41%, respectively. The air resistance of the coated Kraft systems is lower by 8‐ and 11‐fold compared to uncoated Kraft paper, which could be associated with the chitosan film acting as a gas barrier and as a coating agent that fills the pores between cellulose fibers. The dicyanamidobenzene-bridge diruthenium complex [{Ru(tpy)(thd)}(2)(mu-dicyd)][PF(6)] ([3][PF(6)]) (dicyd = 1,4-dicyanamidobenzene, tpy = 2,2':6',2' '-terpyridine, thd = 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-3,5-heptanedione) and its mononuclear counterpart [Ru(tpy)(thd)(Ipcyd)] (2) [Ipcyd = 4-iodophenylcyanamide anion (Ipcyd(-))] were synthesized and fully characterized. Cyclic voltammetry of 3 showed the presence of four reversible one-electron redox couples. UV-vis-NIR spectroelectrochemistry and EPR spectroscopy of the electrogenerated paramagnetic intermediates were used to ascertain the oxidation-state distribution. The stable starting dinuclear complex 3(+) is found to be a ligand-centered anion radical as shown by EPR spectroscopy, magnetic susceptibility measurements, and DFT calculations. Oxidation of 3(+) to 3(2+) led to an EPR silent system due to substantial intramolecular antiferromagnetic interaction of the electron spins carried by the low spin ruthenium(III) atom and the bridging anion radical dicyanamido (dicyd(*)(-)), an observation which was supported by UV-vis-NIR, X-ray structure, and DFT calculations. Complex 3(3+) presented an EPR spectra consistent with a total effective spin S = (1)/(2) issued from an antiferromagnetic interaction of electron spins carried by two low spin ruthenium(III) atoms and the bridging anion radical dicyd(*)(-) in accordance with UV-vis-NIR. This study shows that the dicyanamidobenzene bridging ligand has indubitably a noninnocent behavior.

Two new nanovehicles that have extended aromatic platforms as the cargo zones have been obtained. Two strategies were considered for the formation of the perylene core from two naphthalene precursors. The first was based on a Scholl-type reaction involving an oxidant, and the second used a brominated derivative to perform a homocoupling reaction. The first strategy failed under diverse coupling conditions in the presence of several strong oxidants. Nevertheless, the use of CoF(3) in trifluoroacetic acid triggered a dimerization reaction between two ester groups of one molecule and the naphthalene unit of another, thereby surprisingly yielding a ten-membered carbon macrocycle. The second strategy encountered a lack of reactivity of the substrate under several homocoupling conditions. The dimerization was not easily performed but Ullmann-type conditions ultimately gave the expected product. The low yield and low solubility of the product encouraged us to modify our initial design. The synthesis of a new chassis that incorporated additional tert-butyl groups improved the solubility of the molecules and also prevented overcyclization of the aromatic platform by blocking these positions. Some p-phenylene spacers were also intercalated between the iodine and perylene centers to increase the reactivity of the halide towards coupling reactions. Two new chassis were obtained by Scholl-type oxidative coupling using FeCl(3) as the oxidant. The introduction of four triptycene wheels allowed the formation of the two corresponding nanovehicles.
