Terpenoids from Tripterygium hypoglaucum and their inhibition of LPS-induced NO production

Abstract: One new (1) and three known (2–4) sesquiterpenes and four known diterpenes (5–8) were isolated from the root bark of Tripterygium hypoglaucum. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of extensive spectroscopic analyses (IR, ESI-MS, HR-ESI-MS, 1D-NMR, and 2D-NMR). The inhibitory activity toward LPS-induced NO production of these terpenoids was evaluated, all the compounds showing inhibitory effects.

“…Therefore, it is urgent to search for novel therapeutic reagents for ALI. The traditional Chinese medicine colquhounia root contains several alkaloids, terpenoids, lactones, and phenolic acids, such as triptolide and epicatechin [11]. Colquhounia root has several beneficial pharmacological properties, such as anti-inflammatory, immunosuppressive, antitumor, and analgesic activities [12–14].…”

“…Tripterygium wilfordii Hook.f. has been proved to have strong anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects by many clinical and basic studies, which can significantly improve joint swelling and pain and delay bone destruction in patients with RA ( Zhang et al, 2007 ; Zhao et al, 2014 ; Xie et al, 2015 ; Chen et al, 2018 ). Ligustrum lucidum W.T.Aiton and its extract can improve bone metabolism and inhibit osteoclast differentiation so as to achieve the effect of anti-osteoporosis ( Chen et al, 2017 ).…”

“…The majority of diterpenoids exhibit strong immunosuppressive and anti-inflammatory activities. The inhibitory activity towards LPS-induced NO production of these terpenoids was evaluated in microglial BV-2 cells, and all of the compounds showed inhibitory effects ( Zhao et al, 2014 ). Triptolide is a typical representative abietane terpenoid in THH, that has been reported to have diverse pharmacological effects such as anti-inflammatory, antiproliferative, proapoptotic, immunosuppression, and tumour inhibition effects, and this compound exhibits great efficacy in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, and Shin disease ( Shamon et al, 1997 ; Li J. et al, 2012 ; Chen S.-R. et al, 2018 ).…”
