Inflammation is a physiological process involved in the defenses of the body and the repair of tissues. It is acutely activated by infections, trauma, toxins, or allergic reactions. However, if it becomes chronic, inflammation can end up stimulating the development of diseases such as cardiovascular disease, autoimmune disease, neurological disease, or cancer. Additionally, during aging, inflammation becomes increasingly more chronic. Furthermore, we found that certain foods, such as saturated fats, have pro-inflammatory activity. Taking this into account, in this review we have discussed different diets with possible anti-inflammatory activity, the commonly ingested components of each diet and their active compounds. In addition, we have proposed some dietary guidelines, as well as a list of compounds present in foods with anti-inflammatory activity, outlining how to combine them to achieve optimal anti-inflammatory effects. Therefore, we can conclude that the compounds in our diet with anti-inflammatory activity could help alleviate the inflammatory processes derived from diseases and unhealthy diets, and thereby promote healthy aging.

In the last decades, the search for natural products with biological applications as alternative treatments for several inflammatory diseases has increased. In this respect, terpenes are a family of organic compounds obtained mainly from plants and trees, such as tea, cannabis, thyme, and citrus fruits like lemon or mandarin. These molecules present attractive biological properties such as analgesic and anticonvulsant activities. Furthermore, several studies have demonstrated that certain terpenes could reduce inflammation symptoms by decreasing the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines for example, the nuclear transcription factor-kappa B, interleukin 1, and the tumor necrosis factor-alpha. Thus, due to various anti-inflammatory drugs provoking side effects, the search and analysis of novel therapeutics treatments are attractive. In this review, the analysis of terpenes’ chemical structure and their mechanisms in anti-inflammatory functions are addressed. Additionally, we present a general analysis of recent investigations about their applications as an alternative treatment for inflammatory diseases. Furthermore, we focus on terpenes-based nanoformulations and employed dosages to offer a global perspective of the state-of-the-art.

Terpene-rich fractions of Ficus mucoso (Welw) modulate lipopolysaccharide-induced inflammatory mediators and aberrant permeability of the inner mitochondrial membrane in murine animal model

Ficus mucoso is traditionally used to treat various infections. This study compared the e cacy of terpene-rich fractions of F. mucoso root bark on LPS-induced in ammation, liver mitochondrial permeability transition (mPT) pore, an index of mitochondrial health, and associated pathological alterations. Terpene-Rich fractions of Dichloromethane (TRDF) and Ethylacetate fractions of F. mucoso (TREF) were obtained according to the method described by Ferguson (1956). A single intraperitoneal injection of 1 mg/kg lipopolysaccharide (LPS) were given to mice to induce systemic in ammation for 72hrs. Evaluation of the effects of the TRDF and TREF on levels of pro-in ammatory mediators (TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6) and antioxidant indices against LPS-induced hepatic damage were carried out. Mitochondrial swelling was monitored spectrophotometrically as well as mitochondrial ATPase activity and lipid peroxidation.This study reveals that TRDF and TREF possess anti-in ammatory potentials which is related to reduction in levels of pro-in ammatory cytokines, restoration of antioxidant status, reduction in levels of liver marker enzymes as well as associated pathological injury. Furthermore, LPS caused induction of opening of the liver mPT pore which was signi cantly inhibited by TRDF at 100 and 200 mg/kg bw by 71% and 88% respectively, but only at 100 mg/kg TREF. Furthermore, mitochondrial ATPase activity was inhibited largely by TRDF. The UPLC-ESI-MS analysis revealed the presence of terpenoid derivatives and a few aromatic metabolites in TRDF. The terpene dominance of TRDF metabolites was further justi ed on the 1 H NMR ngerprint.Overall, TRDF is more effective as a cocktail of anti-in ammatory compounds than TREF against LPSinduced acute systemic in ammation.
