Terpene profiling, transcriptome analysis and characterization of cis-β-terpineol synthase from Ocimum

Abstract: Ocimum species produces a varied mix of different metabolites that imparts immense medicinal properties. To explore this chemo-diversity, we initially carried out metabolite profiling of different tissues of five Ocimum species and identified the major terpenes. This analysis broadly classified these five Ocimum species into two distinct chemotypes namely, phenylpropanoid-rich and terpene-rich. In particular, b-caryophyllene, myrcene, limonene, camphor, borneol and selinene were major terpenes present in these… Show more

“…gratissimum , and O . kilimandscharicum (Anand et al 2019 ; Singh et al 2020 ) are available. Consequently, such resource availability can boost the mass production of crucial chemotypes from the selected Ocimum species by targeting specific biosynthetic pathway genes through CRISPR/Cas9 technology or other genome editing approaches where sequence information is a prerequisite.…”

“…In the past few decades, genes involved in the biosynthesis of terpenes have been verified in many plants (Abbas et al, 2019;Anand et al, 2019;Vishal et al, 2019). However, although species within the Cinnamomum genus are rich in terpenes, only one gene encoding geraniol synthase has been isolated and functionally characterized from C. tenuipilum (Yang et al, 2005).…”

“…Terpenoids are the main compounds of different chemotypes in Origanum vulgare ( Wêglarz et al, 2020 ). There are also a few plants with different chemotypes of the principal components that have different skeletal structures, such as Ocimum ( Anand et al, 2019 ). Compared with the metabolites of ArP and ArE by GC-MS, monoterpenoid is the main constituent in the essential oil of ArP, while phenylpropanoids are the main constituents of the essential oil of ArE, except for limonene, which is the only common component in the essential oil of these two chemotypes.…”
