Termes linéaires et quadratiques dans l’effet magnéto-optique de Kerr

We present a setup for temperature-dependent spectral generalized magneto-optical ellipsometry (SGME). This technique gives access to the electronic as well as the magnetic properties of ferromagnetic materials within one single magneto-optical measurement. It also allows the determination of the orientation of the magnetization. We show spectra of the real and the imaginary part of the refractive index N as well as the magneto-optical coupling parameter Q of permalloy and iron films for in-plane magnetization. Our findings demonstrate the relevance of SGME for the understanding of the interplay between electronic and magnetic properties of ferromagnetics.

We compare theoretical images of the same sample obtained with two different scanning near-field optical microscopes. The sample is a two-dimensional periodic array of magnetic sub-micrometric dots. The magnetization is perpendicular to the sample plane (polar magnetization). The first configuration is a scanning tunnelling optical near-field microscope (STOM) where the tip is used in the detection mode and the sample is illuminated by total internal reflection. The second configuration is an inverted STOM: the tip is used in the emission mode and the diffracted field is far-field detected in one direction. We present the models used to describe the two configurations and then explain the main lines of the formalism used to calculate the diffracted fields by a magneto-optical sample.

The Casimir effect results from alterations of the zero-point electromagnetic energy introduced by boundary-conditions. For ferromagnetic layers separated by vacuum (or a dielectric) such boundaryconditions are influenced by the magneto-optical Kerr effect. We will show that this gives rise to a long-range magnetic interaction and discuss the effect for two different configurations (magnetization parallel and perpendicular to the layers). Analytical expressions are derived for two models and compared to numerical calculations. Numerical calculations of the effect for Fe are also presented and the possibility of an experimental observation of the Casimir magnetic interaction is discussed.
