Objective: To characterize the profile of suicide attempts treated at an emergency department in the municipality of Arapiraca, state of Alagoas, Brazil, from 2009 to 2012. Methods: We analyzed all emergency department records containing a diagnosis of suicide attempt. Data were evaluated using Student's t test and Pearson's chi-square test. Significance was accepted at po0.05. Results: We identified 2,142 cases. Suicide attempts were more frequent among women and young adults, but deaths were more frequent among men. Suicide attempts were most frequent among patients aged 10 to 39 years (81.1%). Drug intoxication (65.0%) and non-drug poisoning (16.2%) were significantly more prevalent than other methods of suicide. The month of April (10.6%) accounted for the greatest number of cases, and July had the smallest number (5.5%). Suicide attempts were most prevalent in spring (28.3%), on Sundays (18.4%) and Saturdays (16.8%), and from 12:00 p.m. to 5:59 p.m. Conclusion: Suicide prevention measures should focus on young women. Further research into the care provided to suicide attempters and better monitoring of the sale and use of medicines and poisons could be useful.

“…A taxa média de tentativa de suicídio por intoxicações exógenas no período estudado de 27,3 tentativas/ano pode ser considerada alta, levando-se em conta que foram avaliadas somente as tentativas de suicídio por agentes tóxicos, os quais, geralmente, constituem a terceira causa de suicídio no Brasil. Em outros municípios brasileiros, foram encontradas taxas médias de tentativa de suicídio de 3,45 e 11,4 por 100.000 habitantes, considerando todos os métodos de tentativas de suicídios nos municípios de Jequié (Bahia) 19 e de Santa Maria de Jetibá (Espírito Santo) 20 , respectivamente. Estudo realizado em países europeus relata que as taxas médias de tentativa de suicídio por vários métodos entre idosos chegaram a 61,4/100.000 habitantes 21 .…”

ResumoEste artigo apresenta o perfil das vítimas de tentativas de suicídio por intoxicações exógenas ocorridas no município de Barra do Garças, no Estado do Mato Grosso, no período de 2008 a 2013. Trata-se de um estudo epidemiológico descritivo e transversal dos casos registrados pelo Sistema de Informação de Agravos de Notificação (SINAN). Foram registrados um total de 164 tentativas de suicídio por intoxicações exógenas. Os agentes tóxicos de maior frequência foram os medicamentos (50%) e os agrotóxicos (26,2%). As tentativas foram mais frequentes entre o gênero feminino (71,1%) e na faixa etária de adultos (81%). Informações sobre o uso racional de medicamentos, maior controle sobre a venda de agrotóxicos e a realização de programas sociais de apoio e de atendimento às vítimas poderiam contribuir para a diminuição dos casos.
