Tensor-Based Angle Estimation Approach for Strictly Noncircular Sources with Unknown Mutual Coupling in Bistatic MIMO Radar

Abstract: In the paper, the estimation of joint direction-of-departure (DOD) and direction-of-arrival (DOA) for strictly noncircular targets in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar with unknown mutual coupling is considered, and a tensor-based angle estimation method is proposed. In the proposed method, making use of the banded symmetric Toeplitz structure of the mutual coupling matrix, the influence of the unknown mutual coupling is removed in the tensor domain. Then, a special enhancement tensor is formulated t… Show more

“…Owing to the use of waveform diversity technology, MIMO radar has lots of advantages including flexible operation mode, high angle measurement accuracy, low probability of interception and strong multitarget tracking ability. The research contents in this field mainly include waveform design, beamforming, and parameter estimation [5,6]. In view of the defects in beam pointing of phased array radar and the contradiction between doppler ambiguity and range ambiguity, a new concept of frequency diversity array (FDA) is proposed [7].…”

“…Since the pioneering works [17] [18] of Schmidt (1986) and Roy and Kailath (1989) who introduced the popular subspacebased methods called MUSIC (multiple signal classification) and ESPRIT (estimation of signal parameters via rotational invariance technique), a lot of MUSIC-based and ESPRITbased algorithms have been developed to solve the DoD and DoA estimation problem. In recent years, tensor-based methods have been proposed for joint DoD and DoA estimation in the context of bistatic MIMO radar [19], [20], [21], [22], [23], [24], [25], [26]. Several tensorbased angle estimation methods have also been developed for multipath MIMO wireless communication systems as in [27], [28], [29].…”

“…In the past decades, various spectrum estimation algorithms have been proposed. Typical algorithms including multiple signal classification (MUSIC) [8][9][10], estimating signal parameters via rotational invariance technique (ESPRIT) [11,12], propagator method [13], maximum likelihood (ML) [14,15], tensor-based approaches [16][17][18][19][20], and optimization-aware algorithms [21][22][23][24][25][26][27]. Generally speaking, MUSIC is computationally inefficient as it requires multiple peak search.…”
