Tension-Free Vaginal Tape (TVT) in Women with Recurrent Stress Urinary Incontinence – A Long-term Follow up

Abstract: In a prospective long-term follow-up study we evaluated the results of TVT surgery in 34 women with recurrent stress urinary incontinence in whom previous traditional surgical procedures had failed. The women were followed for a mean of 4 years (range 3-5) after TVT surgery. The mean age was 58.9 +/- 10 years and the mean parity 2 (0-4). Pre- and postoperative evaluation was performed according to a protocol which included gynecologic examination, urodynamic investigations, quality of life evaluation and 24-ho… Show more

“…For patients with recurrent incontinence, the results are similar to those achieved with a primary procedure; for those with a fixed urethrovesical junction, the outcome is poor, as it is with any other surgical procedures [41][42][43]. Holmgren conducted a long-term study, published in 2005, concluding that initial cure rates of TVT were good for mixed incontinence but did not persist after four years [44].…”

“…Subjective cure was assessed by self-reporting of participants and responses to symptom-based questionnaires (15). Deval et al (23) and Ulmsten et al (18) reported subjective cure rates of 70% and 85% respectively in large studies on TVT for SUI , and cure rates of 74% have been reported on mid-urethral TVT for ISD (17). A recent systematic review of surgical treatments of SUI demonstrated similar cure rates in the MUS and RFS group and a trend towards a higher re-operation rate in the MUS group (24).…”

“…In attempt to reduce these complications, Delorme et al (28) developed a procedure through which the sling is introduced via the obturator foramen. There is now a significant evidence in the Literature with several Authors who remark the success of retropubic TVT for the treatment of SUI, and a large number of prospective trials have been conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the retropubic TVT procedure (35,(37)(38)(39).…”
