Tensiometric and Phase Domain Behavior of Lung Surfactant on Mucus-like Viscoelastic Hydrogels

Abstract: Lung surfactant has been observed at all surfaces of the airway lining fluids and is an important contributor to normal lung function. In the conducting airways, the surfactant film lies atop a viscoelastic mucus gel. In this work, we report on the characterization of the tensiometric and phase domain behavior of lung surfactant at the air-liquid interface of mucus-like viscoelastic gels. Poly(acrylic acid) hydrogels were formulated to serve as a model mucus with bulk rheological properties that matched those … Show more

“…Surface tension of synthetic mucus with concentration in Actigum TM varying between 0.5 and 2 wt % has been measured by a du Nouy ring tensiometer at 23°C. The results are compared to former results obtained on real mucus or mucus simulants in Table . The surface tension is particularly interesting since it is closely related to the wettability and adhesiveness of bronchial mucus on the epithelium surface.…”

“…This high-resolution Fabry-Perot interferometry is exploited to study equilibrium thicknesses in the nanometer range of polymer brushes at solid-liquid interfaces 44 . Interferometry at the water interface was also used to detect patchy phase separation in the case of mucus coexisting with electrolytes 45 .…”
