Tensile, Thermal and Moisture Absorption Properties of Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) / Bengkuang (Pachyrhizus erosus) Starch Blend Films

Abstract: This paper described the tensile, thermal, and moisture absorption characteristic of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) / bengkuang (Pachyrhizuserosus) starch blend films. The film was produced through the solution casting method. Tensile, thermogravimetric analysis and moisture test were studied to determine the tensile strength, thermal stability, and moisture absorption, respectively. The highest tensile strength (TS) was 15.86 ± 0.69 MPa for pure PVA film. This result was higher than bengkuang starch and its blends f… Show more

“…The immediate decrease in the tensile strength with the addition of GnP could be due to the lubricating effect of GnP and lower interaction with polymer matrix at a lower concentration. A similar trend in the reduction of tensile strength with the immediate addition of fillers has been reported earlier in composites of PVA with starch 36 and with hybrid fillers of GO and Fe 3 O 4.…”

“…The values of the elongation obtained by us vary between 120% and 180%. Various values ranging from 22% to 280% elongation are reported in the literature and our values are higher than most of the reported values 10,13,16,36,41 . Higher elongation values in our nanocomposites might be due to the sliding of GnP in the PVA matrix.…”

“…The effect of the additional PPP as natural fillers into PVA film on the tensile properties, including tensile strength (TS), percent elongation at break (ɛ) and Elastic modulus (E) as shown in Figure 3. The TS value for PVA control film is 16.3814 MPa and was found to be higher than the results reported by Asrofi et al [11] due to the additional of citrus pectin as a thickening agent in the film matrix. Pectin is a group of heteropolysaccharides naturally found in the cell wall of vascular plants which act as a cementing matrix in the cellulosic fiber [12].…”

“…Namun, sifat ini sangat bergantung pada kelembaban, dimana semakin tinggi kelembapan maka akan semakin banyak uap air yang akan terserap dari lingkungan sekitarnya. Hal ini menyebabkan film PVA mengalami penurunan kekuatan tarik, kekuatan sobek dan peningkatan elongasi (Asrofi et al, 2019). Penambahan serat alam ke dalam matriks PVA diharapkan dapat mengatasi masalah hal tersebut.…”
