Tensile tests and analyses of notched specimens fabricated from high strength steels using a generalized yield model

Abstract: A B S T R A C T This article summarises the uniaxial tension tests for 20 notched bars fabricated from highstrength steel Q345 specified in Chinese National Standards. The effects of the notch radius, r, and that of the notch depth ratio, d /D, on the ductility and fracture resistance of this high strength steel are examined. The experimental data are further analyzed using a generalized yield model together with an elliptical fracture stress envelope originally proposed by the first author. The experimental r… Show more

“…Using an elliptical yield model together with an elliptical fracture model suggested by literature [4][5][6], the conventional joint of H-style beam-square steel tubular column was numerical simulated and analyzed under low-cycle reversed loading. Based on the elliptical fracture model revised by considering residual stress and flaws duo to welding, the parameters of slot holes and horizontal haunch at beam flanges on failure mode of joints of H-style steel beam-square steel tubular column were studied by finite element method, and the value of slot holes at beam flanges were suggested.…”

“…For example, ductile fracture of many structural steels occurred during the Northridge earthquake in 1994 and the Kobe earthquake in 1995. This motivated researchers to pay more attention to ductile fracture of steel structures …”

“…This motivated researchers to pay more attention to ductile fracture of steel structures. [1][2][3][4][5][6][7] For a ductile structural component without any preexisting crack and with extensive plastic deformation, micromechanic-based observations provide deep insight of its fracture behaviour. 8,9 Based on physical exploration and empirical analysis, various fracture criteria have been proposed by researchers.…”
