“…Callus (2007) reported that needles of a diameter ≤1.0 mm distributed at the distance greater than 3-5 diameters cause no deterioration of the mechanical characteristics of the jointed composite plates and promote a uniform distribution of the stress. Presence of ±45° plies, with optimum amount of 30% to 50% of the total content of fibers, noticeably reduced concentration of the stresses (Gamdani et al 2015;Schläpfer, Kress 2014). Adhesive bonding is a quite natural technology for joining structural members made of FRP composites with polymer matrix.…”

“…The mechanical fastening requires drilling holes in the jointed components. Recent studies conducted by Bodjona, Lessardand (2015), Saleem et al (2015) and Gamdani et al (2015) can be mentioned amongst many others dedicated for analysis of stress distribution at a hole in laminated composites. Cutting the reinforcing fibers and introduction of the stress concentrators lead to reduction of the mechanical properties of the joints.…”

“…In consequence, the bolted joint effectiveness in composites is worse than in metals, which detract from the weight advantage of composites [ 28 , 29 ]. Apart from the bolted joining, alternative methods of mechanical joining composite materials to metals have been developed.…”

“…In agreement with all these findings in the literature, the AASHTO LRFD (American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials Load-and-resistance Factor Design) [ 6 ] restricts pure punched holes in the primary loading carrying members and gives limits of material thickness in some other uses. In addition, a considerable amount of recent research [ 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 ] was developed based on the open-hole tension and bolt-filled hole tension tests in accordance with ASTM (American Society of Testing Materials) standards [ 12 ] to provide mechanical characteristics of composite laminates.…”
