Tensile Strength and Water Absorption of Oil Palm Mesocarp Fiber Reinforced Polyester Composites: Effect of Volume Fraction of Fiber

Abstract: Oil palm fiber has been developed for application of composite reinforcement. This fiber can be produced from the fruit of oil palm like mesocarp and empty fruit bunch fibers. In this paper, the oil palm mesocarp fiber used as reinforcement of composite was focused on the variation of volume fraction of fiber in the composite related to tensile strength and water absorption properties. The variation of volume fraction of fiber includes 10%, 20%, 30% and 40%. The unsaturated polyester was used as a matrix. Prio… Show more

“…Impact energy on fiber volume fraction 20% HTBF, with variations in fiber configuration 0 0 /0 0 /45 0 /-45 0 /0 0 /0 0 ; 0 0 /45 0 /0 0 /0 0 /-45 0 /0 0 ; 45 0 /0 0 /0 0 /0 0 /0 0 /-45 0 , respectively: 18.67, 18.68, 18.68 J, impact toughness respectively: 0.113, 0.113, 0.112 J/mm 2 . What influences the energy and impact toughness of polyester composites with HTBF reinforcement is the variation in the volume fraction of HTBF natural fiber, in line with the results of the study (Bakri et al, 2022). The composite samples were tested by the tensile and water absorption tests.…”

“…For coconut coir fiber composite, the maximum stress of 17%, 22% and 27% volume fraction are 16.46 MPa, 20.16 MPa and 26.33 MPa respectively and the maximum strain is 0.11, 0.20 and 0.13 respectively. Furthermore, the results of the tensile test experiment are used to model the material in numerical simulations [17] [18].…”
