Tensile properties of melt intercalated polyamide 6 – Montmorillonite nanocomposites

Abstract: The effects of montmorillonite (MMT) addition level on the tensile properties of PA6-MMT polymer-layered silicate nanocomposites (PLSN) were quantified using factorial experimental design (FED) to fit experimental data to a series of polynomial response equations.Tensile behaviour, determined via FED, was related to the morphologies of the PLSN and compared to additional experimental data, determined for both a PLSN produced as a confirmation experiment and a PA6-MMT microcomposite of equivalent MMT content. “…The embrittlement is all the higher as the clay content increases, acting as crack initiators. Finally, the tensile performances obtained with NaMMT are comparable with the ones reported in the literature [4]. Wilkinson et al [4] report that tensile modulus and yield stress are improved by 73% and 28% respectively when 5 wt% OMMT is incorporated in a PA6 matrix.…”

“…Subsequently, knowing the macro values of stress and strain tensor it is possible to compute approximated values at the micro level, in each phase. Micromechanical models have been applied in several studies to predict elastic properties of nanocomposites (Luo & Daniel, 2003;Wu et al 2004;Wilkinson et al, 2007;Chavarria & Paul, 2004) as well as damage and failure Chen et al, 2003;Chen et al, 2007;Boutaleb et al, 2009). Luo et al (Luo & Daniel, 2003) studied properties enhancement of epoxy matrix reinforced with silicate clay particles.…”
