“…Currently, the leading first line treatment includes surgery to debulk the tumour and multiple cycles of carboplatin and paclitaxel chemotherapy [3,4]. Despite initial positive responses to therapy in approximately 75% of patients five year survival rates are still under 30% [5][6][7]. Therefore, novel therapeutic approaches are urgently needed.…”

“…Despite the use of modern therapeutic approaches, patients suffering from ovarian cancer still have poor prognosis, with a 5-year survival rate lower than 30% [2]. The high mortality of ovarian cancer is mainly due to the difficulty in early diagnosis, metastasis, and resistance to chemotherapeutics [3].…”

“…Epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) accounts for nearly 90% of all ovarian malignant diseases and serves as a strong and long-standing interest in OC research. For patients in early stage (stage I), the tumor is confined to ovaries only, which is highly curable with an expected 5-year survival rate at about 89% [2]. However, due to the absence of specific symptoms and the lack of effective screening strategies, approximately 75% of OC patients present at an advanced stage disease accompanied with metastasis within the peritoneal cavity, and the overall survival (OS) rates are only 17-36% [2].…”

In addition to the difficulty in early diagnosis, chemoresistance is the main challenge for the poor survival rates of OC patients.…”
