This study used the Purdue Regional Model to simulate the 1998 EASM to assess the model performance. The results indicated that the model was capable of simulating the overall characteristics of the 1998 EASM on the seasonal, intraseasonal, onset, and daily time scales. On the seasonal time scale, the model tended to produce more precipitation over the land and less precipitation over the ocean. This land-sea contrast in the model performance was consistent with the stronger-than-observed Pacific anticyclone in the simulation. It appears that the over simulated anticyclone was also found in other models, and is not a unique problem to the PRM. Future studies are needed to tackle this seemingly fundamental problem in several regional models.The model simulated the seasonal march of the EASM well, characterized by northward-propagating rain bands. Intraseasonal oscillation events propagating northward were also well reproduced. These results confirm that the model is capable of producing realistic sub-seasonal variability in the inner domain, once the proper lateral boundary forcing is provided.The model correctly simulated the onset timing and dramatic changes before and after the onset. However, the model incorrectly simulated the circulation and precipitation during the onset, because it failed to simulate the rapid development of a weak trough in the northern South China Sea. After the onset period, the model performance became reliable again. This indicates that the model is capable of fixing the existing large biases, with the proper lateral boundary forcing.This model was able to simulate the gross fluctuation in the regional-averaged daily precipitation, although it missed some extreme events that resulted in flooding in China. The incorrect simulation of these extreme events was partially responsible for the biases in the simulated seasonal precipitation. It is suggested that a regional model should be able to simulate the multi-scale features from the daily to seasonal time scales and their mutual interaction to correctly simulate the monthly and seasonal mean fields.

In this study, we investigated spatial and temporal changes in precipitation over the Coordinated Regional Climate Downscaling Experiment (CORDEX) East Asia domain, for present (1986)(1987)(1988)(1989)(1990)(1991)(1992)(1993)(1994)(1995)(1996)(1997)(1998)(1999)(2000)(2001)(2002)(2003)(2004)(2005) and future (2031-2050) periods using the Regional Climate Model version 4 (RegCM4). Future meteorology produced by the Hadley Center Global Environmental Model version 2 coupled with the Atmosphere-Ocean (HadGEM2-AO) following global climate change scenarios (Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP) 4.5 and 8.5) was used as meteorological boundary conditions for the RegCM4. Six subregions (South Korea, North China, South China, Japan, Mongolia, and India) in the CORDEX East Asia domain were considered for analysis. The RegCM4 simulated spatial distributions of precipitation over East Asia with a correlation coefficient of 0.7 against Climate Research Unit data. The simulation skills of its temporal variability varied based on geographical regions and seasons, showing relatively poorer performance (underestimation in rainfall amount) in summer than in winter, in general. The future climate simulations by the RegCM4 presented that the East Asian continental regions will be warmer and more humid, leading to increased precipitation amounts, especially in the summer. The summer precipitation amount was projected to increase by about 5%, on average, over the East Asian domain, 5À15% in most subregions, and even higher (44% and 24%) in the South Korean region for the RCP 4.5 and 8.5 scenarios, respectively. It was also expected that heavy rainfall (> 50 mm/d) events may occur more frequently in the future possibly owing to meteorological changes that are favorable to convective heavy precipitation.

Future climate projection under IPCC A1B scenario in the source region of Yellow River with complex topography using RegCM3

Located on the Tibetan Plateau, the source region of Yellow River has experienced remarkable climate change over past a few decades, which affects the regional ecosystem, agricultural development, and water availability. In this paper, high-resolution RegCM3 driven by ECHAM5 is applied to generate both control climate for 1980-2000 and regional climate projections for the 21 st century under the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) A1B emission scenario. For control climate, RegCM3 can well reproduce the spatial patterns of precipitation and surface air temperature with more detailed representation of fine scale topography. Wet and cold biases are produced in the simulation, but overall improvement by RegCM3 is evident compared to the driving global climate model (GCM) of ECHAM5. In the future projection, the model demonstrates significant warming over the whole analysis domain. Precipitation on the other hand shows mixed signals of reduction and increase over simulation domain, while the areas of precipitation reduction extend with increasing integration time and finally cover most parts of the domain at the end of 21 st century. As projection time increases, high altitude region will experience more precipitation reduction in summer and less reduction or even increase in winter. The winter warming at the high elevation area gets more evident than that at the low elevation area, which may be due to the snow feedback. Analyzing the change of probability distributions of surface climate, it can be concluded that the frequency of heavy precipitation in winter tends to increase with time indicating more extreme precipitation events in the future. The spectrum of temperature probability density functions (PDFs) moves toward higher end.
