Ten considerations for conservation policy makers for the post-COVID-19 transition

Abstract: Public health and safety concerns around the SARS-CoV-2 novel coronavirus and the COVID-19 pandemic have greatly changed human behaviour. Such shifts in behaviours including travel patterns, consumerism, and energy use, are variously impacting biodiversity during the human-dominated geological epoch known as the Anthropocene. Indeed, the dramatic reduction in human mobility and activity has been termed the "Anthropause". COVID-19 has highlighted the current environmental and biodiversity crisis and has provide… Show more

“…As we also demonstrated in this study, the benefits derived from lower human disturbances, among other impacts, on marine ecosystems should not be overlooked (see also Cooke et al, 2020). However, the main human impacts on global marine ecosystems are far from being reduced (Ripple et al, 2017).…”

“…In Borovik and Pensini's (2022) study, support was unexpectedly stronger among those experiencing financial insecurity during the pandemic – suggesting a shift in how people typically prioritise their needs. Hence, rather than solely focusing on economic recoveries, “policymakers should acknowledge and attempt to preserve societal changes which have simultaneously benefited human wellbeing and biodiversity” ( Cooke et al, 2021, p. 113 ). The environmental indicators data collected during the Anthropause could guide pandemic recovery plans.…”

“…Conservation policies are important and cannot be ignored (Jansen et al, 2022). Various conservation policies have been discussed with various objectives such as for conservation policies in the post-COVID-19 transition (Cooke et al, 2021), and the development of building energy conservation in China (Han et al, 2021), as well as utilization.…”
