Ten Challenges for Ontology Matching

Abstract: Abstract. This paper aims at analyzing the key trends and challenges of the ontology matching field. The main motivation behind this work is the fact that despite many component matching solutions that have been developed so far, there is no integrated solution that is a clear success, which is robust enough to be the basis for future development, and which is usable by non expert users. In this paper we first provide the basics of ontology matching with the help of examples. Then, we present general trends of… Show more

“…We borrow the concept of mapping used in ontology alignment works ( [25,23]) to represent correspondences among concepts of two ontologies and among the concepts of the application ontology and the schema descriptors. We use two types of mappings: ontological mappings between two concepts of ontologies and ontology-schema mappings linking a ontological concept to a schema descriptor.…”

“…However, as underlined in [13] there are still several challenges to address. In this section we focus on the problems for which we provide a substantial improvement:…”

“…Despite the progress on this topic, a lot of work still has to be done [13]. A recent study [6] has underlined that current matching tools offer poor support to users for the process of creation, validation and maintenance of the correspondences.…”

“…Furthermore, new technologies such as GPS, the Internet and smartphones have made it much easier for skilled volunteers to record species observations, resulting in a deluge of potentially useful but often unstructured data (Silvertown, 2009). Before these data can be analysed to derive new knowledge, they must be made accessible at a single location and integrated: translated into a single, easy to understand and machine-readable format with a well-defined meaning, in such a way that the contained information is preserved (Andelman et al, 2004;Shvaiko and Euzenat, 2008).…”
