Temporomandibular Joints in Asymptomatic and Symptomatic Nonpatient Volunteers: A Prospective 15-year Follow-up Clinical and MR Imaging Study

“…28 In the present patients the prevalence of TMJ clicking was 11% (3/28 TMJs) at T3 and 25% (7/28 TMJs) at T4 (Table 3), and was thus of the same magnitude as that found in subjects representing normal populations. 22,30,31 Summarizing our results, there was no indication that any of the long-term follow-up findings on TMJ disorders were related to Herbst therapy.…”

“…These measurements can only be used if the disc is displaced in an antero-lateral direction. According to different studies, antero-lateral disc displacement is less frequent than antero-medial disc displacement [13,15,17]. We have not compared our results with the studies that have used only static high-resolution US.…”

“…The TMJ can be affected by osteoarthritis, rheumatologic diseases, gout, luxation, ankyloses, benign or malignant tumors, and infections. TMJ internal derangement, defined as when the disk is improperly positioned in relation to the condylar-fossa complex, affects between 7.9% and 44% of the population, although few affected individuals develop clinical symptoms requiring medical attention [8][9][10][11].…”
