Temporomandibular Disorders and Oral Features in Idiopathic Inflammatory Myopathies (IIMs) Patients: An Observational Study

Abstract: Aim: Inflammatory idiopathic myopathies (IIMs) are inflammatory processes affecting skeletal musculature and extramuscular organs. Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) involve jaw muscles and temporomandibular joint. The aim of this observational study was to investigate the prevalence of the main TMD symptoms and signs as well as oral implications in IIM patients. Methods: The study group included 54 patients (42 women and 12 men), 22 of whom affected by dermatomyositis (DM), 29 by polymyositis (PM) and 3 by inc… Show more

“…Crincoli et al also reported that bruxism, which was similar to the habit of clenching in this case, was not reported in patients with idiopathic inflammatory myopathies, such as polymyositis and dermatomyositis. They concluded that this could be explained by a condition of muscle weakness caused by loss of muscle mass and impaired intrinsic contractility [ 8 ].…”

“…Among adults, the prevalence of TMD ranges from 1% to 75% for objective signs and 5% to 33% for subjective symptoms [ 4 ]. TMD’s etiology is multifactorial and often influenced by age, gender, hormonal imbalances, traumatic injuries, stress and other systemic diseases [ 3 , 5 , 6 , 7 ]. Age plays an etiological role in TMD: the prevalence of TMD is usually more common in young adults and the range from 20 to 40 years of age coincides with the peak of the incidence of TMD, as reported by previous studies [ 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 8 ].…”
