Temporary trigeminal disorder as a result of pneumocephalus after subarachnoid block

Abstract: A patient was scheduled for inguinal herniorrhaphy under subarachnoid block. Lumbar puncture was dif®cult and several attempts were needed before it could be achieved. During the immediate postoperative period, the patient developed paraesthesia and anaesthesia on the right side of the face, mostly in the nose, cheek and upper lip areas. A CT scan showed a small pneumocephalus at the level of the brainstem. The symptoms persisted for approximately 70 min, after which they disappeared.

“…As the sensory block level was not higher than T6, her difficulty in speaking was not due to recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy. Temporary trigeminal disorder may occur as a result of pneumocephalus after subarachnoid block [10]. In the present case, no air bubble was found on MRI scan.…”

“…Vagal traction may stimulate chemoreceptors in the medulla to induce nausea. Traction on the abducens and trochlear nerves can lead to ocular muscle paralysis, with subsequent strabismus and double vision [10,11]. Hearing loss has also been reported, due to a low CSF pressure transmitted to the inner ear via the cochlear aqueduct.…”

“…This study opens a new option in targeting IL-17A to modulate inflammatory response to CS and may be the bases for new therapy for COPD. chronic obstructive pulmonary disease; interleukin-17 CHRONIC OBSTRUCTIVE PULMONARY DISEASE (COPD) is defined as "a disease state characterized by airflow limitation that is not fully reversible, and that is usually both progressive and associated with an abnormal inflammatory response of the lungs to noxious particles or gases" (13). Caused predominantly by cigarette smoking, COPD is one of the leading causes of mortality globally (37).…”
