“…According to the existing literature, it is expected that colostomy closure is more likely to be associated with infected wounds than ileostomy closure [13, 14]. In this study, colostomy closure indeed resulted in more postoperative wound infections, compared to ileostomy closure (27 vs. 13%), but this difference was not statistically significant.…”

“…These authors have discouraged the routine use of temporary stomas, which can cause an additional burden due to stoma-related complications. In fact, the presence of a stoma has been correlated with significant morbidity and mortality rates (15-20 and 0.4 %, respectively) and with several specific complications (see Table 2) [16,[35][36][37]. The presence of a stoma also worsens the quality of life of ostomatous patients and can cause a permanent change in body image, with a significant psychological impact [38].…”

“…Moreover, stoma reversal can have a significant impact on patients, with a morbidity rate of 17 % and a non-negligible (0.4 %) mortality rate [35]. Furthermore of the patients who have undergone anterior rectal resection with a temporary stoma a percentage from 6 and 20 % will not undergo stoma reversal [36,37]. This percentage increases to 50 % if we consider only the elderly patients [39].…”

“…[16][17][18][19] Only 3 systematic reviews have been published: a meta-analysis of the complications of temporary ileostomy versus temporary colostomy 20 ; a review of risk factors and prevention of parastomal hernias 21 ; and a review of the management of parastomal pyoderma gangrenosum. 22 None of these included an evaluation of the definitions for stoma complications, the measurement methods used to evaluate stoma complications, or the implications of measurement on study results.…”
