Temporal variations in rainfall patterns in Kilembe, Uganda

Abstract: This study investigated rainfall variabilities in Kilembe. Secondary (monthly rainfall) data for the study were obtained from the Uganda National Meteorological Authority in Kampala, Uganda, for the period 1986–2016. To determine the temporal variation of rainfall, a Mann–Kendall method and Sen's slope estimator test were used. The results showed that March, April, May, October, and November represented the smallest coefficient of variation indicating modest variability of rainfall in these months, whereas Jun… Show more

“…Age, gender, poverty and settlement in floodplains also affected the vulnerability of communities and individuals to floods (Mucherera and Mavhura, 2020). Bearing in mind the aforementioned literature, with the increasing trend in rainfall (Tibara et al, 2021a) and increasing frequency and magnitude of flash floods in the area (Jacobs et al, 2020;KDLG, 2020;Tibara et al, 2021b) with consequent damages, this research focused on analysing the drives of community vulnerability to flood hazards in Kasese Municipality.…”

“…Like much of the world, floods are common in Uganda (Ogwang et al, 2012; Tibara et al, 2021a). Besides causing death, floods destroy public health facilities, schools, and various infrastructures among others (Department of Disaster Preparedness and Management [DDPM] & Office of the Prime Minister [OPM], 2011).…”

“…In recent times, several studies globally (Fetene et al, 2019;Malik et al, 2019;Rao et al, 2020;Meng et al, 2020;Bayable et al, 2021;Tibara et al, 2021) have assessed rainfall patterns in light rainfall pattern in rapidly urbanizing cities. There is also the need to incorporate climate-related adaptive strategies in existing water management policies.…”

“…Adeola et al (2021) asserted that rainfall patterns not only vary in amount from year, season, or month to another but may show a downward or upward trend over a given period. In comparing the highly variable nature of the rainfall in the tropics, with the relatively stable pattern of the temperature, rainfall appears to have more relevance as the major component in the study of climate (Gbuyiro et al, 2002; Tibara et al, 2021). In any agroecological zone anywhere in the world, rainfall is a major determinant of agriculture production (Meng et al, 2020 ).…”
