Temporal Stability of the Japanese Versions of the Flourishing Scale and the Scale of Positive and Negative Experience

Abstract: The Flourishing Scale (FS) and the Scale of Positive and Negative Experience (SPANE) are reliable, valid instruments used to assess aspects of well-being such as psychological flourishing and positive and negative feelings. The Japanese versions of these scales (FS-J and SPANE-J) have been shown to have adequate internal consistency and construct validity. Test-retest reliability of the Japanese versions, however, has not yet been assessed. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to assess the test-retest rel… Show more

“…Regarding other types of validity, the present study found similar levels of convergent and criterion validity as well as similar internal consistency compared with previous validations (Silva and Caetano 2013;Sumi 2014a). Temporal reliability is higher than the original validation of the scale (Diener et al 1985) but lower than japanese study (Sumi 2014b).…”

“…The items use a 5-point response format ranging from 1 (very rarely or never) to 5 (very often or always). The subscales had good internal consistency reliability (Cronbach's alphas = 0.86 to 0.93) and test-retest reliability over one month (rs = 0.60 and 0.57), and the items loaded onto two separate factors (Sumi, 2013(Sumi, , 2014. Convergent validity was supported by correlations with scores on several well-being measures (Sumi, 2013).…”

“…2) Positive and negative affect Positive and negative affect was assessed using the Japanese version of the 12-item Scale of Positive and Negative Experience (Diener et al, 2010;Sumi, 2013Sumi, , 2014. This scale has a 6-item positive affect subscale and a 6-item negative affect subscale.…”

“…The scale has well-established psychometric characteristics in different countries, such as America , Japan (Sumi, 2014), Portugal (Silva & Caetano, 2011), New Zealand (Hone, Jarden, & Schofield, 2015) and Germany (Esch, Jose, Gimpel, von Scheidt, & Michalsen, 2013). The majority of findings illustrated good reliability (Cronbach's α higher than .80) and convergent validity (higher correlations with other well-being measurements).…”
