Temporal-spatial parameters of the upper limb during a reach & grasp cycle for children

Abstract

The empirical data were presented in the form of percentile charts. ResultsThe average values of LL ranged from 26.0 • to 40.0 • . The lowest LL values both in males and females occurred at the initial stage of the studied developmental period -between 3 and 97 percentiles within the range of 20.0-45.0 • . The peak period of LL deepening occurs in both sexes at the age of 17-18, when physiological limit values are 23.5-57.0 • . DiscussionThe significant variation in normative values of LL depends on various methods and research instruments. However, the principal reason for the great span of test results of the correct LL is the indication of its terminal vertebrae. The demonstrated ontogenetic variability is subjected to changes characteristic of most morphological features. The extreme ranges of LL obtained in the electrogoniometric image are within the limits of the radiological standard [1]. Similar results were achieved applying non-invasive techniques [2,3]. The level and the mutual proportions of spondylometric features may constitute an indicator of physical development, as well as an indicator of action of biological modifiers related to physical activity or pathological condition of the organism.

“…In the case of my Stanford colleague Dr. Jessica Rose, director of the Motion Analysis Lab at our Packard Children's Hospital in Palo Alto, CA, USA, we refined markerbased motion analysis of the upper limb with a project-based course we both taught, Anatomy of Movement [10]. Two seemingly disparate marker-based motion analysis projects linked the hand and wrist to the bigger joints and trunkone examining the elite golf swing [8] and the other examining reach and grasp [2]. From there, we transitioned to the more challenging task of examining CMC-controlled fine motion in relation to larger joints, as reported in this manuscript [7].…”
