Temporal-spatial distribution of the hermit crab Loxopagurus loxochelis (Decapoda: Diogenidae) from Ubatuba Bay, São Paulo State, Brazil

Abstract: The present work was conducted to determine the distribution of Loxopagurus loxochelis collected monthly, over a period of one year, in Ubatuba Bay (from September/95 to August/96). A total of 179 specimens were collected (138 males, 30 females and 11 ovigerous females). The greatest depth, predominance of very fine sand and highest mean value of organic matter contents of sediment, in combination with the low temperatures registered in winter (July and August), determined the presence of L. loxochelis in the … Show more

“…As proposed by Mantelatto et al (2004), the occurrence of the hermit crab L. loxocheles in lower temperatures is due to the optimum of geographical distribution of this species. It is mainly distributed along the southern Brazilian and Argentinean coasts (Melo 1999), where the water is cool year-round.…”

“…The species biology has been studied continuously at the Brazilian coast (Mantelatto and Martinelli, 2001; Martinelli et al, 2002;Mantelatto et al, 2004;Bertini et al, 2004;Biagi et al, 2006); however, due to the great extent of the Brazilian coast and endemism, it is necessary to evaluate the characteristics of distinct populations, as well as suitable gastropod shells used by different populations of L. loxochelis.…”

“…The presence of Diogenidae (hermit crabs) in the high‐ and low‐water levels at the cleared and intact mangroves suggested that the spatial distribution of this taxon is driven by the preference for fine sediment over sandy bottoms (Lowery & Nelson ) or for sediment with high organic content (Mantelatto et al . ).…”
