Temporal resolution improvement in cardiac CT using PICCS (TRI‐PICCS): Performance studies

Abstract: The TRI-PICCS method can be used to systematically improve temporal resolution for MDCT cardiac imaging by a factor of 2-2.3 and the performance of the TRI-PICCS method is insensitive to motion locations and motion orientations. The TRI-PICCS method enables a single-source MDCT scanner with 350 ms or faster gantry speed to scan patients with heart rates as high as 100 bpm.

“…For the typical third generation architecture with a single X-ray tube and a single detector array positioned on a gantry and rotated jointly around the patient, the temporal resolution is approximately half of the gantry rotation time [15]. Modern single-tube systems have gantry rotation times of approximately 300 ms (270-350 ms), and a temporal resolution of approximately 150 ms. Temporal resolution can be improved using reconstruction techniques that work with limited projection data [16,17].…”

“…Note that there is no need to perform a full SVD in SVT λ (X), since only those singular values above the selected regularization parameter λ are needed as shown in Eq. (18). However, in the application presented in our paper, the difference between a full SVD and an economical SVD is negligible from computation load standpoint since we only have 3-5 time image columns and thus only 3-5 singular values.…”
