Temporal morphometric analyses of Pila globosa in India for its use in aquaculture and food industry

Abstract: Background Although the apple snail Pila globosa is used as indicator species for human consumption locally and as fish feed, research on it in general is very scanty. It is used in food industry, in aquaculture as fish bait and used as food in many regions of India and many other countries, but research on it has been started in the 1970s. Only 40 articles are available on this organism in PubMed indicating an urgent need of basic research on it especially work on its spatiotemporal morphometr… Show more

“…However, from the available literature, it is prominent that nickel deregulates the protein content in the snail and modulates certain respiratory enzymes, which is more noticeable in the hepato-pancreatic of the snail P. globosa compared to its other tissue. It could be due to the high metabolic status of the hepatopancreas as compared to other tissues (Panda et al, 2021a;Panda et al, 2021b).…”

“…It is also used as an animal feed additive in freshwater aquaculture in this region due to the high protein content of their meat. Some studies have been carried out earlier on its length-frequency distribution, morphometry, length-weight relationship and condition factor from India and adjacent countries (Saha et al, 2016;Panda et al, 2021).…”

“…Under adverse environmental conditions, OS can be resulted leading to various other associated cellular metabolic disorders (Paital et al, 2016). To combat the deleterious effects of such prooxidants or ROS, aerobes have been endowed with antioxidant defense systems including enzymatic such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glutathione reductase (GR), glutathione -s-transferase (GST) and nonenzymatic parameters such as the reduced glutathione (GSH), ascorbic acid (AA) and 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging potential (Panda et al, 2021a). These parameters are very sensitive to environmental stress factors and pollutants; hence, these can be used as indicators and also can be helpful in environmental studies in response to various sites and seasons (Mdegela et al, 2006;Minier et al, 2006;Paital andChainy 2013a, 2013b;Bolognesi and Cirillo, 2014;Manciocco et al, 2014;Qu et al, 2015;Walters et al, 2016).…”
