Temporal and Spatial Trends of Total Aliphatic Hydrocarbons of Diesel Range and Trace Elements in Sediments and Mussels of the Corral Bay Area, Valdivia, South Central Chile

Abstract: Sediments and mussel specimens of Mytilus chilensis were analyzed for organic pollutant fingerprints and heavy metals in the Corral Bay area of Valdivia, South Central Chile during the period [2003][2004]. GC-MS analysis show hydrocarbon fingerprints corresponding mainly to mixed inputs of aliphatic hydrocarbons of the TPH-diesel fraction and biogenic hydrocarbons, indicating low to medium contamination by petroleum hydrocarbons with high biodegradation of petroleum in sediments at Las Coloradas, La Escuela an… Show more

“…Such bioaccumulation patterns are properties of PAH mixtures generated from petrogenic pollution (Burgess et al, 2003;PalmaFleming et al, 2004;Riyahi et al, 2009). Our results are in line with those reported by Palma-Fleming et al (2012) and Barhoumi et al (2014c) in mussels collected from the Corral Bay (South Central Chile) and the Bizerte lagoon (Tunisia), respectively, and those by Van der Oost et al (1994) in fish collected from Amsterdam (Netherlands). A dominance of 2-to 3-ring PAHs was also reported in those cases.…”

“…2 and S1) were generally comparable to reported baseline levels of these elements previously measured in other relatively pristine lacustrine sediments in Chile (Urrutia et al 2002;Fagel et al 2010;Palma-Fleming et al 2012), but were substantially lower (*tenfold) than those measured in lacustrine and river sediments from more industrialized and populated areas in the country (Segura et al 2006;Fagel et al 2010). For example, the concentrations of Pb and Zn were as high as 60 lg/g and 1300 lg/ g, respectively, in sediments collected from Mapocho River, which runs through and receives anthropogenic inputs from Santiago, Chile (Segura et al 2006 (Table S6) in the sediments attest to the impacts of the extensive slash and burn that occurred in Aysén region of Patagonia during the last century.…”

“…There was no signi cant difference between the two bivalves samples (p > 0.05). It was similar to the PAH pro le of mussels collected from the Corral Bay of South Central Chile and the Bizerte lagoon of Tunisia, which was reported by Palma-Fleming et al (2012) and Barhoumi et al (2014), respectively. The ratio of low molecular PAHs (two to three rings) to high molecular PAHs (four to six rings) was utilized to predict the pollution sources of different congeners, In general, LMW/HMW > 1 indicates the petrogenic origin, whereas LMW/HMW < 1 indicates the sources of pyrolytic (Yunker et al, 2002).…”
