Temporal and Spatial Study of Water Quality and Trophic Evaluation of a Large Tropical Reservoir

Abstract: A water quality study was carried out at the Adolfo López Mateos (ALM) reservoir, one of the largest tropical reservoirs in Mexico, located within an intensive agricultural region. In this study, the seasonal and spatial variations of nine water quality parameters were evaluated at four different sites along the reservoir semiannually over a period of seven years (2012–2018), considering the spring (dry) and fall (rainy) seasons. An analysis of variance was performed to compare the mean values of the water qua… Show more

“…Additionally, the findings of this study suggest that significant rainfall variations cause extreme seasonal surface runoff and rapid changes in the water quality (Chlorophyll- a , DO, NH 4 + , and NO 3 – ) of this subtropical lake, as well as rapid variations in the phytoplankton community ( Figures 3 , 2 , 5 , 7 ). Studies on the temporal variations in the phytoplankton community have been carried out in temperate regions, but only a few have been reported in tropical or subtropical regions, such as Lake Cajititlán ( Limón-Macias et al, 1983 ; Umaña-Villalobos, 2010 ; Riediger et al, 2015 ; Li et al, 2018 ; Ma et al, 2019 ; Quevedo-Castro et al, 2019 ). The wet season in tropical and subtropical areas exacerbates the cultural eutrophication of surface water bodies when there is intensive agricultural activity in their basin ( Barbosa, 2009 ; Cunha et al, 2013 ).…”

“…The ALM reservoir (Culiacan, Mexico) is in the Humaya River basin (25°05′25″, 25°20′15″ North, 107°33′00″, 107°15′00″ West) at 186.5 m above the sea level (m.a.s.l.). The ALM dam is 105.5 m high, and 765 m long, considered one of the main sources of water for agricultural irrigation, power generation, fishing, and tourist activities [26][27][28], covering 11,354 ha and ranked tenth in Mexico according to its storage capacity [29] (Figure 1). The Humaya River basin is characterized by a warm humid climate toward the center and south, with summer rains.…”
