Temporal and spatial dynamic propagation of electroencephalogram by combining power spectral and synchronization in childhood absence epilepsy

Abstract: ObjectiveDuring the transition from normal to seizure and then to termination, electroencephalography (EEG) signals have complex changes in time-frequency-spatial characteristics. The quantitative analysis of EEG characteristics and the exploration of their dynamic propagation in this paper would help to provide new biomarkers for distinguishing between pre-ictal and inter-ictal states and to better understand the seizure mechanisms.MethodsThirty-three children with absence epilepsy were investigated with EEG … Show more

“…4c). This suggests their role in initiating and propagating the hyper-synchronized state, consistent with extensive observations and predictions in literature 3136 . Additionally, we find certain cortical networks (orbital, sensorimotor) to be more critical for synchronization propagation than others (visual) 23 .…”

“…Previous studies have suggested that epileptiform discharges may occur before seizures ( 55 ). In EEG-fMRI studies, patients with JAE have partially activated brain areas in the pre-ictal state ( 56 , 57 ).…”

“…PSD analysis of EEG is a widely used method for quantifying power in a specific frequency band reflecting the process of regional brain activities 27 , 28 , which has been used for evaluating dynamic changes in neural activity during the initiation and propagation of seizures 29 and for exploring markers to predict the risk of seizures 30 . According to previous literature 29 , 30 , increased PSD can represent increases in neural activities, which may be a predisposition to seizure.…”

According to previous literature 29 , 30 , increased PSD can represent increases in neural activities, which may be a predisposition to seizure. Therefore, our findings of increased PSD in the entire areas of the delta, theta, and beta bands and in the frontal areas of the alpha band in the AIS group, compared with the seizure-free group, suggest that the AIS group may have inherent seizure susceptibility, even in the resting-state.…”
