Template‐free Electrosynthesis of Platinum Nano‐Cauliflowers for Catalysing Electron Transfer Reaction of Plutonium

Abstract: A coupled‐oxido‐reductive multiple‐potentiostatic pulse strategy was developed to electrochemically prepare platinum‐nano‐cauliflowers (PtNCFs) on indium‐tin‐oxide (ITO) coated glass electrode. The mechanism of electrocrystallization was studied during the formation of PtNCFs on ITO. By virtue of that synthesis strategy, the PtNCFs/ITO surface could catalyse the quasi‐reversible electron transfer reaction of plutonium (Pu) (IV)/(III) redox couple in aqueous sulphuric acid solution compared to bare ITO.

“…is a challenging task. From the results of the electrocrystallization studies as discussed in Section 3.1 and previous skills developed by the authors, [34][35][36][37][38][39] a synthesis strategy was built, relying on a sequence of potentiostatic pulses (Figure 5A). For this purpose, we took a polished surface of bare GCE and immersed it in the nitrogen-purged aqueous solution of 5 mM HAuCl 4 in 0.1 M HCl in an electrochemical cell and applied a potentiostatic pulse (P) of potential 1.500 V for 5 s to assure a clean and active GCE surface followed by another potentiostatic pulse (N) of potential 0.000 V for a very short duration of 0.015 s to nucleate Au seeds instantaneously (as much as possible) on the GCE surface.…”

“…Electrosynthesis of metal micro-/nano-structures, that is, electrochemical synthesis through controlled nucleation and growth of the metal is an emerging green method for the preparation of metal micro-/nano-structures in the absence of physical templates and chemical additives, being most suitable for various applications. [34][35][36][37][38][39] While the method can provide a highly active and exposed metal surface, the development of the electrosynthesis method is critical.…”
