Temperature responsive copolymers of N‐vinylcaprolactam and di(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate and their interactions with drugs

Abstract: Poly(N‐vinylcaprolactam) (PVCL) and poly(oligo(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate) (POEGMA) are well known for their thermoresponsive behavior in aqueous solutions. Indeed, they display lower critical solution temperatures (LCST) in the physiological range, which makes them interesting for biomedical devices and use in drug delivery systems. Homopolymers of N‐vinylcaprolactam and di(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate as well as copolymers thereof were synthesized by solution and direct miniemul… Show more

“…Additionally, Zuber et al showed that the presence of bioactive molecules, such as lidocaine and its derivatives (hydrochloride and acetamide), had shifted the LCST of aqueous solutions of the linear copolymer of poly(2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethyl methacrylate) and poly(N-vinylcaprolactam) to lower values. 12 These data are intriguing in light of the opposite results obtained for PMEO 2 MA hydrogels in the present work.…”

“…28 Lowe et al found that hydrophobic ibuprofen (in the form of acid) induced a decrease of the PNIPAM-based microgels'' size below the LCST of PNIPAM and sharpened the VPT. 12 It was also reported for PMEO 2 MA hydrogels 29 that DS eq reached greater values if the gels were swelled in more basic solutions. Ibuprofen sodium salt, used in these studies, is the sodium salt of weak acid, which results in a slightly alkaline medium (pH varied between 7 and 8).…”

“…The corresponding poly( N ‐vinylcaprolactam) (PVCL) is nontoxic and shows a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) in water in the range of 32–38 °C, depending on the concentration and the molecular weight . PVCL is commonly used in biochemistry and medicine, such as drug delivery, as well as in cosmetics, personal hygiene, and paintings . However, PVCL lacks of functional groups, which limits the modification of its physical and chemical properties.…”

“…This effect opens perspectives for applications in biochemistry and medicine . Accordingly, because of its LCST in the physiological range, PVCL is potentially suitable for biomedical applications such as drug delivery . However, since the lack of functional groups, physical and chemical properties of the homopolymer cannot be tuned.…”
