Temperature, Humidity and Air Pollution Relationships during a Period of Rainy and Dry Seasons in Lagos, West Africa

Abstract: Air pollution is a concern in the West Africa region where it is known that meteorological parameters such as ambient temperature and humidity can affect the particulate matter loading through atmospheric convection and dry deposition. In this study, we extend the investigation of these relationships to particulate matter less than 1 µm in diameter (PM1), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), nitrogen monoxide (NO) and ozone (O3), for a complete period of rainy and dry seasons in Lagos. Regression analysis of the results in… Show more

“…Our mean results for PM 1 /PM 10 compared to other locations like 0.64-Varanasi region, India (Chauhan et al [38]); 0.48-Chennai city, India [39]; and 0.62-Lagos, Nigeria [40]; but lower than 0.92-Barcelona, Spain [41]. The differences in PM 1 /PM 10 ratios suggest variations in pollution sources.…”

“…Figure 3 shows the PM 10 and PM 2.5 toxicity potentials (TPs). The TPs are classified thus: gion, India (Chauhan et al [38]); 0.48-Chennai city, India [39]; and 0.62-Lagos, Nigeria [40]; but lower than 0.92-Barcelona, Spain [41]. There is noticeable spatial variability in toxicity potential among the locations.…”

“…Studies suggest that air pollutants tend to be lower during wet season in comparison to dry season due to a decrease in the removal of particles through wet processes during the dry season (Emekwuru & Ejohwomu, 2023). During the dry season, elevated land surface temperature and low precipitation were observed to coincide with higher concentrations of air pollutants such.…”
