BaCuSi 4 O 10 (Han blue), CaCuSi 4 O 10 (Egyptian blue), and SrCuSi 4 O 10 are pigments found in many ancient artifacts all over the world. Behind their brilliant color, we demonstrate here that these ancient pigments are strong candidates for photonic materials due to their bright Stokes and anti-Stokes emissions. These pigments give near-infrared emissions (NIR) from Cu 2+ centered at around 930 nm under excitation of 440-800 nm light. This NIR emission can also be produced by pumping using a NIR laser diode. With the rise of pumping density, the emission bandwidth increases notably and stretches to the visible region, giving rise to bright, and broadband photon upconversion (UC). This photon UC process is interpreted in terms of laser-driven blackbody radiation from the ancient pigments.

Imaging of complex (biological) samples in the near-infrared (NIR) is beneficial due to reduced light scattering, absorption, phototoxicity, and autofluorescence. However, there are few NIR fluorescent materials known and suitable for biomedical applications. Here we exfoliate the layered pigment CaCuSi 4 O 10 (Egyptian Blue, EB) via ball milling and facile tip sonication into NIR fluorescent nanosheets (EB-NS). The size of EB-NS can be tailored to diameters <20 nm and heights down to 1 nm. EB-NS fluoresce at 910 nm and the fluorescence intensity correlates with the number of Cu 2+ ions. Furthermore, EB-NS display no bleaching and high brightness compared with other NIR fluorophores. The versatility of EB-NS is demonstrated by in-vivo single-particle tracking and microrheology measurements in Drosophila melanogaster embryos. EB-NS can be uptaken by plants and remotely detected in a low-cost stand-off detection setup. In summary, EB-NS have the potential for a wide range of bioimaging applications.

Here, we exfoliate the layered pigment CaCuSi4O10 (known as Egyptian Blue, EB) via facile tip sonication into nanosheets (EB-NS) with ultra-high nIR fluorescence stability and brightness. EB-NS fluoresce at 910 nm and the total fluorescence intensity scales with the number of Cu 2+ ions that serve as luminescent centers. Furthermore, EB-NS display no bleaching and ultra-high brightness compared to other nIR fluorophores. The versatility of EB-NS is demonstrated by in vivo single-particle tracking and microrheology measurements in developing Drosophila embryos. Additionally, we show that EB-NS can be uptaken by plants and remotely detected in a low cost stand-off detection setup despite strong plant background fluorescence. In summary, EB-NS are a highly versatile, bright, photostable and biocompatible nIR fluorescent material that has the potential for a wide range of bioimaging applications both in animal and plant systems.
