Temperature dependence of the pitch in chiral lyotropic chromonic liquid crystals

Abstract: Polarized optical microscopy image of a fingerprint texture for a lyotropic chromonic liquid crystal entering the chiral nematic–isotropic coexistence region. The helical axis is in the plane of the image and the perpendicular distance between the stripes is around 50 μm, half the chiral nematic pitch.

“…For chiral mixtures DSCG was dissolved in 10%w/w L‐alanine water solution following literature. [ 20–23 ] Oxazine perchlorate (less than 1‰ w/w) was added to DSCG solution. For KCl tests the L‐alanine was prepared in 0.1 and 0.01 m KCl solutions.…”

“…CLC molecules are typically plank-shaped with aromatic cores and polar groups on their peripheries [12]. They tend to stack face-to-face so as to form columns that order into a fluid nematic phase or (for higher concentrations or lower temperatures) even in a solid-like medium phase, where columns are organized parallel to one another with their centres arranged in an hexagonal pattern [2].…”
