Temperature and Composition Dependence of the Elastic Properties of Semiconducting (100 -x)V2O5-xPbO Oxide Glasses

Abstract: Subject classification: 61.43.Fs; 62.65.+k; S10.15 Semiconducting vanadate lead glasses with different PbO contents have been prepared by rapid quenching technique. Ultrasonic velocities and attenuation measurements have been performed over a wide range of temperatures from 150-480 K. Elastic moduli, Debye temperature and Poisson's ratio have been obtained for different PbO contents as a function of temperature. For a fixed temperature, the composition dependence of velocities and attenuation shows a monotonic… Show more

“…The longitudinal and shear ultrasonic waves were generated respectively by X and Y-cut transducers. Precise transit time measurements were carried out by cross-correlation technique described elsewhere [15]. The precise ultrasonic velocities (U L and U S ) in each glasses were obtained by measuring the precise transit time (t) using the relation [20] …”

“…Such studies would widen the range of options for clinical applications. Ultrasonic non-destructive testing (NDT) is a unique tool for complete characterisation of materials [15][16][17][18] such as biological glasses, in addition to the conventional flaw characterisation in industry.…”

“…The optimized variation of bulk modulus with increasing alkali content exhibited different trends before and after thermal treatment. Bulk ( K ) modulus is the measure of the changes in the number of bonds per unit volume or the changes in the cross‐link density of the glass structure, and changes in bond stretching force constants as the composition changes . It can be attributed to the change in network bonds per unit volume that occurred mainly because of the release of thermal stress.…”

“…The observed variation of T g is due to the addition of PbO, which replaces V 2 O 5 or TeO 2 , or both. [16] extensively over a wide range of PbO contents. The observed results indicate that PbO is incorporated into the glass network as a modifier or former, depending on PbO content.…”
