Temperament Assessment Algorithm in Dogs

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate the temperament of dogs on the basis of behavioral observations, with emphasis on 24 selected traits and behaviors. From the observations, the temperament of the dogs was determined and the animals were assigned to one of two personality groups: introvert or extrovert. The study involved 46 dogs. The agglomeration method, Pearson’s 1-r distance, and Ward’s binding method were used. As shown by the statistical analysis, 18 dogs (39%) were assessed as introverts and 28 dogs … Show more

“…temperament and personality, where temperament is an integral part of the personality (16). Taking advantage of the fact that caretakers know their animals best, having observed them in different situations throughout their lives, researchers can provide key information to help estimate the animal's temperament by answering simple questions (17).…”

“…The focus of this article is on hypertypes selected for physical appearance, but behavioral hypertypes also exist with potentially negative effects for well-being [52]. Behavioral characteristics are heritable [53], described in breed standards, and they can be evaluated by research tools such as the Canine Behavior and Research Questionnaire (C-BARQ) [54] and simple owner-targeted questionnaires [55]. Selection within a breed can be biased towards either show or working dogs.…”

“…There is a wide range of methods for determining the temperament, higher nervous activity or working qualities of dogs, which vary considerably and are used for different purposes. In particular, based on behavioural observations, it is possible to reliably assess the temperament of dogs (introvert or extrovert) (Karpiński et al, 2022). Quantifying behaviour and temperament with sensor-based dog toys can provide a way to predict which dogs will be suitable for guide dog work (Byrne et al, 2022).…”
