Temper Tantrums in Young Children: 1. Behavioral Composition

Abstract: Although tantrums are among the most common behavioral problems of young children and may predict future antisocial behavior, little is known about them. To develop a model of this important phenomenon of early childhood, behaviors reported in parental narratives of the tantrums of 335 children aged 18 to 60 months were encoded as present or absent in consecutive 30-second periods. Principal Component (PC) analysis identified Anger and Distress as major, independent emotional and behavioral tantrum constituent… Show more

“…Temper outburst component behaviors were identified for each individual based on such behaviors that have been previously reported in the literature (Oliver, Woodcock & Humphreys, 2009;Potegal & Davidson, 2003;Wakschlag et al, 2012) and a semi-structured interview with caregivers (see supplementary materials). Thus, individualised diary report cards were created for each participant which included lists of possible temper outburst component behaviors, antecedent events (triggers), and following events.…”

“…It is a commonplace observation that some behaviors are linked to lower intensities of anger while others are more closely linked to higher intensities. In children's tantrums, e.g., stamping is associated with low anger, screaming, hitting and kicking with high anger [Potegal et al, 2003]. Young children are poor reporters of their own emotions, particularly anger [e.g., Levine et al, 1999].…”
