The Brunei Temburong Bridge (BTB) is an iconic project connecting Brunei Muara and Temburong districts in Brunei over a length of 30 km. The bridge crosses from Brunei Muara across Brunei Bay to Temburong. A key aim of the BTB project was the development of Temburong district, being prior the more isolated district, because of not having a direct land link to the other districts. This study reviews the geology of soil materials and sedimentary rocks along the bridge alignment based on 164 boreholes drilled for ground investigation. Standard Penetration Test, Rock Quality Designation and Fracture Index data were evaluated to interpret soil materials and sedimentary rocks along the alignment. Borehole data was used to generate lithological cross sections along the alignment providing an overview of geology. The geology encountered is extremely heterogenous, with low strength sediments encountered at depth of up to 80 m and more e.g., at the Temburong section. Rock quality designation vs. Fracture Index did not show a strong correlation likely due to the extreme heterogeneity in particular for the Brunei Bay and Temburong sections. The study demonstrates the importance of a closely spaced investigative drilling and sampling program for major construction programs which was successfully achieved for this project. Other investigative techniques such as geophysical methods could be highly useful for future projects. Considering economic and environmental reasons these techniques could be very useful to map the top of the bedrock even under highly heterogeneous ground conditions.

The new 30 km Cadangan Projek Jambatan Temburong (Temburong Bridge Project) in Brunei will provide a highway link between the two separated parts of Brunei, by spanning Brunei Bay. The complex geological setting brings particular challenges to the design and construction of the foundations required for the various forms of bridge structures. The varying depths of geological stratigraphy along the alignment and different loading conditions call for multiple deep foundation types, as well as different construction methodologies, to be adopted. Part 2 of this paper on the Ground Engineering aspects of the project focuses on the choices of foundation for different sections of the crossing, the geotechnical design approach and verification strategy, and the relevant computer analyses undertaken.

The new Cadangan Projek Jambatan Temburong (Temburong Bridge Project) in Brunei will connect the relatively isolated district of Temburong with the more developed Brunei-Muara district. It is a 30km long dual two-lane highway which includes 14km of marine viaducts and 2 cable stayed bridges over Brunei Bay, 12km of viaducts through Temburong, as well as tunnels and other viaduct structures in Brunei-Muara. The project is procured as a traditional engineer-design, contractor–construct arrangement under five contract packages.The design of the structures is to the Eurocode and the UK National Annexes, with project specific criteria developed to account for the different environmental conditions between Brunei and the UK. The design of the cable stayed bridges is one of the first applications of the Eurocode to a fully concrete cable stayed bridge. The project specific Design Basis report defines the requirements for the design of the Works during the detailed design phase and then later it is used by the contractor to understand what design assumptions were adopted in the permanent works design.Historic wind data was used to determine a site specific wind climate which defines the design wind speed as well as the turbulence intensity. Further risk assessments were conducted to determine appropriate criteria for design against major fire incidents.Major studies were undertaken into durability. This led to specific requirements for concrete mix, use of stainless steel reinforcement in splash zone areas and review of sacrificial steel thicknesses for steel pipe piles.This paper provides details of the procurement strategy and design criteria, including project specific aspects, as described above. It also outlines aspects of the specification for the project which form part of the construction contracts.
