TEM Study of High-Temperature Precipitation of Delta Phase in Inconel 718 Alloy

Abstract: Inconel 718 is widely used because of its ability to retain strength at up to 650∘C for long periods of time through coherent metastable Ni3Nb precipitation associated with a smaller volume fraction of Ni3Al precipitates. At very long ageing times at service temperature, decomposes to the stable Ni3Nb phase. This latter phase is also present above the solvus and is used for grain control during forging of alloy 718. While most works available on precipitation have been performed at temperatures below the solvu… Show more

“…The 5 and y'/y" phases precipitated out during the two-stage aging heat treatment, but the peaks of the 5 phase in the SR-1+HIP+HT-1 aged microstructure was the most significant. Its most intense peak was observed at 46.11° and this 29 value is consistent with the experimental results from other research [13]. The y' usually forms at a higher temperature o f ageing (720 °C) while the precipitation of y" takes place at the lower temperature of ageing (620 °C).…”

“…The y' usually forms at a higher temperature o f ageing (720 °C) while the precipitation of y" takes place at the lower temperature of ageing (620 °C). Both phases are metastable and at higher temperature usually more than 650 °C the y" coarsens very fast and transforms into either y' or orthorhombic 5 [8,13]. The high intensities of NbC peaks were detected in the SR-2+HIP+HT-2 aged microstructure ( Figure 3).…”

“…It has often been said that the precipitation of δ phase within Inconel 718 and ATI 718Plus causes a degradation in mechanical properties [9,12,[76][77][78]. This is due to the transformation of γ into δ phase within the microstructure.…”

“…The material has been rebuilding after plastic deformation. Grain boundaries are rich in δ phase [27]. The precipitation of δ phase in the form of thin plates, is carried in the discontinuous reaction, starting at the grain boundaries, and at a later stage in the form of intergranular precipitates.…”
