Telerehabilitation robotics: Bright lights, big future?

Abstract: Abstract-The potential for remote diagnosis and treatment over the Internet using robotics is now a reality. The state of the art is exemplified by several Internet applications, and we explore the current trends in developing new systems. We review the technical challenges that lie ahead, along with some potential solutions. Some promising results for a new bilateral system involving two InMotion2 robots are presented. Finally, we discuss the future direction and commercial outlook for rehabilitation robots o… Show more

“…However, the variable time-delays, packet losses, and disconnections that can occur over an internet connection can induce unstable force, degrade the performance and can be harmful to the teleoperators [14]. Different timedelay compensation techniques have been developed to overcome this problem, such as wave-scattering theory (and the wave-variable approach) [15] and Smith predictors [16].…”

“…17 In particular, task-specific neurorehabilitation using robotics coupled with ESD approach can significantly improve the field of rehabilitation and yields considerable benefits for patients with stroke impairments. 4,18 In the recent years, different telerehabilitation systems have been developed to improve patients' activities of daily living in the attempt to increase their independent living at home. [19][20][21][22] The systems for robot-aided telerehabilitation can be grouped into two different classes: systems in unilateral configuration and systems in bilateral configuration.…”
