Telephone‐based management of chronic pain in older adults in an integrated care program

Abstract: Older adults treated with psychotropic medications often also experience chronic pain that interferes with daily activities. A telephone-based care management intervention is acceptable and feasible with an older community-based population and can lead to improvements in anxiety symptoms and interference from chronic pain. Further research will help to refine interventions that may help improve symptoms and increase functioning with this population.

“…The major findings suggest that this DPMP has the potential to relieve the pain symptoms of older adults. The results of a significant decrease in pain intensity and pain interference are in keeping with previous studies [50][51][52][53][54][55]. However, the improvement of psychological parameters was not obvious.…”

“…Similar studies support this finding with users of psychotropic drugs reporting poor pain control [ 42 , 43 ]. Helstrom and colleagues (2018) found that chronic pain was identified in 14% of 250 older adults who were recently prescribed a psychotropic medication, who also reported pain interference with daily activities [ 44 ]. It is important to note that pain is often a symptom of mental illness, such as depression, and mentally ill persons may be untreated for their pain due to the priority given to treating symptoms of mental illness [ 45 ].…”
